Woodcarving has its historical roots in the ancient Yemeni
civilizations. Although wooden pieces have not survived to the modern
day, inscriptions on stone suggest the skill and type of ornamentation
practiced in woodcarving as well. In fact, wooden sticks were probably
the principal writing material in Old South Arabia, with a hand-carved
cursive script seen on thousands of ancient sticks radically different
from the formal letters seen carved in ancient stone monuments.
This intensive use of wood continued through succeeding periods, and
the Yemeni people pioneered a craft that now graces many buildings and
mosques. Beautiful platforms, unique furniture, and household
ornamentation all reflect the great brilliance of Yemeni woodcarving.
